Pearls of the Kingdom 10/11/23

There is so much for us to consider as we look at Marks Gospel chapter 4:35-41 and chapter 5:1-43. Please take the time to read through these verses.

What is the first thing that stands out to you after reading these verses? I‘ll give you a minute to ponder this question. I sense four important keys to consider in regards to Jesus.

1.Jesus has power over the elements:

Mark 4:39-41 “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

2. Jesus has power over demons (unclean spirits, evil spirits):

Mark 5:6-8 “When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”

3. Jesus has power over sickness:

Matt 5:27-29 “When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.”

4. Jesus has power over death:

Mark 5:39-42 "He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat."

I can only imagine that once again the disciples found themselves pondering this same question again (Mark 4:41), “Who is this Jesus?” Not only the wind and waves, but He also has power and authority over demons, sickness and death.

Perhaps the greatest question anyone can ask, “Who is this Jesus?” Can I encourage you to come back again next week? Continue to ask for open eyes, open ears, open heart, as we look closer.
